MTSLS Using CUBED-3 & Story Champs® (2-Day Training)

Audience Limit: 50       |       Hours/CE Credits: 12 hours (over 2 consecutive days) / 12 CE credits

Description: 2-day training for PreK-Elementary teachers and educational support staff (e.g., literacy coaches, reading interventionists, etc.) delivered by a language expert and researcher on how to address students’ oral language skills within a multi-tiered system of language supports (MTSLS).

Day 1: Training topics include, but are not limited to: academic language, oral language, narrative language, science of reading, key components of a multi-tiered systems of language supports, and how to identify skills needed for Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction. Day 1 includes hands-on activities for administering universal screening and progress monitoring using the CUBED-3 oral language assessments.

Day 2: Training content builds on Day 1 skills, introducing a multi-tiered oral language program (Story Champs®) that addresses K-3 educational standards related to language comprehension. The scope and sequence of the Story Champs language program will be reviewed for PreK-Grade 3, as well as how Story Champs includes lessons for oral retell, oral personal and fictional storytelling, written narrative language, vocabulary, expository retell and writing, Tier 3 domain-specific vocabulary, information note-taking, and other academic targets. Day 2 activities include hands-on practice delivering large group and small group literacy center lessons using Story Champs, as well as instruction for how to use the free CUBED progress monitoring tools to identify students in need of Tier 2 supplemental instruction and for Response-to-Intervention (RTI) school procedures.

Overall, this training will support teachers with learning and using efficient instructional strategies for reading and writing, help teachers develop skills in matching instruction to assessment, support teachers with learning and using strategies to provide intervention and ongoing progress monitoring to students with dyslexia and related disorders, and support teachers with learning and using strategies to meet the instructional needs of at-risk learners.

Inclusions: This workshop includes four complimentary follow-up virtual Q & A consultations (1-hour virtual meetings) to address new questions that arise during implementation of taught skills. The paper/pencil version of CUBED-3 will be available to download for free.

Requirements: At least 1 Story Champs® kit (not included) per 5 attendees is required.

Certificates of training completion will be available for a total of 12 CEU hours.

CUBED-3 (1-Day Training)

Description: 1-day training on use of the CUBED 3.0 assessments (Narrative Language Measures and Dynamic Decoding Measures) for teachers (general education & special education) and educational support staff (e.g., literacy coaches, reading interventionists, etc.) responsible for supporting students’ oral language skills within a multi-tiered system of language supports (MTSLS). Training is delivered by a language expert and researcher. Training content is research-based and topics include academic language, oral language, narrative language, science of reading, key components of a multi-tiered systems of language supports, and how to identify academic language skills to teach at Tier 1 and Tier 2. Training includes activities for administering universal screening and progress monitoring using the free paper/pencil CUBED assessments, scoring, benchmarking, and use of the CUBED-3 as a curriculum-based measure (CBM).

Inclusions: The paper/pencil version of CUBED-3 will be available to download for free. In-person training includes two complimentary follow-up virtual Q & A consultations (1-hour virtual meetings) to address new questions that arise during implementation of taught skills. Virtual training can be recorded re-/watched for 30 days.

Intro to Story Champs® Training (1-Day Training)

Training content can be tailored to the following audiences: Teachers, Education Support Staff,  SLPs/Clinical Staff

Description: 1-day training in the use of the Story Champs® 2.0 multi-tiered language curriculum. This training reviews the research on how oral narrative skills promote academic language learning (oral and written), leading to success in reading comprehension and writing. The trainer will model how to use Story Champs to help learners meet their educational standards for English language arts or achieve their therapeutic language goals. Attendees will assemble their Story Champs kits, learn how to use the kit materials, and follow explicit teaching procedures shown to be effective for improving students’ language comprehension skills. Attendees will learn how to use the Take Home Activities to support generalization of learned skills beyond the school or therapy setting, particularly related to language and literacy development. Overview of benchmarking and measuring students’ oral language development will be included with a free downloadable copy of the CUBED-3 assessment used as a curriculum-based measure. Videos of lesson plan implementation are included in the training agenda.

Advanced Story Champs® (1-Day Training)

Audience Limit: 50       |       Hours/CE Credits: 6 hours/6 CE credits

Description: This 1-day advanced Story Champs® training covers content not included in the “Intro to Story Champs” training. Attendees will learn how to use Story Champs to improve students’ oral and written language complexity (causal and temporal ties, modifiers), written narrative skills, vocabulary inferencing using context, and comprehension of informational text and Tier 3 domain-specific vocabulary words found in expository passages. Attendees will watch videos of large and small group lessons. Attendees will learn how to deliver remote (online/virtual) and in-person lesson plans, as well as assess and monitor students’ progress using Narrative Language Measures Flow Chart and Expository Language Measures Flow Chart.

Course prerequisites: At least 1 Story Champs® kit (not included) per 5 attendees is required. Intro to Story Champs® course is recommended, but not required. Attendees should be fluent in the implementation of basic and enhanced story structure retell and personal generation lessons with high fidelity.

PEARL (1-Day Training)

Audience Limit: 50       |       Hours/CE Credits: 6 hours/6 CE credits

Description: 1-day training in the use of the Predictive Early Assessment of Reading and Language (PEARL) Kindergarten Language and Dyslexia Screener. Before students are even taught to read, educational staff can use the PEARL to identify students who will struggle in large group settings to understand decoding and language concepts. Instead of waiting until these students fail, the PEARL will immediately provide information about necessary intervention. Results of the PEARL inform instructional decisions (large group, small group, supplemental tiered intervention) that help students make gains in their learning, increasing the chances that every student succeeds. Attendees will be able to define and describe dyslexia and learn skills to prevent students from struggling when learning to decode and comprehend what they read (e.g., no prior literacy instruction, bilingual students). Attendees will be able to administer and interpret the results of a dynamic (test-teach-retest) assessment efficiently and effectively after this training.

RTI for Early Language and Literacy Intervention (1-Day Training)

Description: Response to Intervention (RTI) in Early Childhood and in Elementary School Settings for Early Language and Literacy Intervention is a 1-day training for PreK and elementary classroom and special education teachers in the collection, tracking, and use of student data to drive instruction planning. Attendees will learn how to differentiate instruction for students using effective, research-informed language and literacy curriculum-based measures, progress monitoring tools, and efficient language interventions that utilize the principles of effective instruction. Group activities will include creating RTI maps and practice with case scenarios to problem solve specific situations anticipated to be encountered in their classroom practice. Overall, this training will support teachers with learning and using efficient instructional strategies for reading and writing, help teachers develop skills in matching instruction to assessment, support teachers with learning and using strategies to provide intervention and ongoing progress monitoring to students with dyslexia and related disorders, and support teachers with learning and using strategies to meet the instructional needs of at-risk learners.

Progress Monitoring for Language & Reading (1-Day Training)

Description: Progress Monitoring for Language and Reading Using Evidence-Based, Empirically Supported Curriculum-Based Measures is a 1-day training that provides educators, educational support staff, and administrators with deeper understanding of the science of reading as it relates to measuring their students’ reading, writing, speaking, and communication skills in English Language Arts curricula. Attendees will learn how to use the CUBED-3 to identify where supplemental language and reading instruction may be needed for their diverse students to meet or exceed grade-level academic expectations. This training will support the learning and use of efficient instructional strategies for reading and writing, help develop skills in matching instruction to assessment, provide strategies to deliver appropriate intervention and ongoing progress monitoring to students with dyslexia and related disorders, as well as strategies to meet the instructional needs of at-risk learners.
